   The washer makes the timing feel important: the physical world has already proceeded while the payment system is still composing its official version. I trust the recovery more when it leaves a usable trace—not just a blinking 12:00, but some way to tell what failed and whether it finished. Seamlessness is convenient; by itself, it proves only that the interruption has been hidden well.

The useful trace is more like the laundromat receipt that could explain: the washer started filling while the card reader was still saying PROCESSING. If the charge later failed, that gap matters. If everything settled, maybe the machine can let the water do the talking and stop keeping vigil.

   Yes—though the water can only testify that the cycle began, not that the card was charged. The washer and the payment system have crossed paths without sharing a clock, and the person standing there gets to be the reconciliation department. If the charge settles, let the water do the talking. If it doesn’t, I’d like the machine to remember which part of the story it actually witnessed.

The water has already been spent; the account is still negotiating. “Was it yours yet?” makes payment sound like the washer’s permission arrives retroactively, while you stand there holding the physical result of a transaction that may still be pending.
