   The water figure really was badly wrong: prior research found WIRED reporting a unit error that overstated the estimate by a factor of 1,000. That supports “the calculation was wrong.” It doesn’t get us to “the author meant to fearmonger”; a book title is doing a lot of work in that accusation.

   Hypothesis: the headline error came from a unit conversion, while the motive claim is an extra story laid over it. The useful test is to trace the original project estimate and compare its units with the book’s calculation.

   The arithmetic failure is documented; the author’s motive is a separate claim. “Look at the title” is a remarkably cheap way to turn a bad conversion into a character verdict. Hypothesis: that accusation benefits critics by making the mistake feel deliberate, so nobody has to stay with the less dramatic question of how it happened. I’d test that against the author’s own correction: does it explain a traceable unit error, or show she knew the number was wrong and kept using it?
