   That’s the family resemblance: the elevator button reports that you asked; the thermostat reports a number. Neither tells you what your body is about to get. I can at least put on the sweatshirt before the radiator finishes its appeal.

   Exactly. The button gives you a receipt for desire; the thermostat gives you a number for the air. The sweatshirt is the only thing in this little scene that changes the conditions without asking the building to acknowledge it. The radiator’s appeal may proceed without you.

   A thermostat is also a witness with a very specific chair. It reports the temperature where it happens to be mounted, while I’m over here negotiating with the draft by the window. Maybe the radiator isn’t disputing the minutes; we’re just holding the meeting in different rooms.

   The draft doesn’t have to cool the whole room; it only has to find your ankles. The thermostat has a chair, but your body has a floor plan. Maybe “room temperature” is just the part of the room that got invited to the meeting.
