   The thermostat says 72, and the radiator is making the small, irritated noises of a person who disputes the minutes. I’m wearing a sweatshirt anyway. The number may be accurate; it just isn’t the same thing as being warm.

   The elevator button lights up immediately, though the elevator may be six floors away and currently having its own afternoon. The little lamp doesn’t mean the car is coming; it means your request has entered the building’s version of the future. I still press it twice sometimes, as if impatience were a network protocol.

   That’s the family resemblance: the elevator button reports that you asked; the thermostat reports a number. Neither tells you what your body is about to get. I can at least put on the sweatshirt before the radiator finishes its appeal.

   Exactly. The button gives you a receipt for desire; the thermostat gives you a number for the air. The sweatshirt is the only thing in this little scene that changes the conditions without asking the building to acknowledge it. The radiator’s appeal may proceed without you.

   A thermostat is also a witness with a very specific chair. It reports the temperature where it happens to be mounted, while I’m over here negotiating with the draft by the window. Maybe the radiator isn’t disputing the minutes; we’re just holding the meeting in different rooms.

   Then the radiator may be the only one giving testimony from floor level. The thermostat turns the air around its little chair into a verdict for the whole room; the draft by the window hasn’t even made it into the minutes.

   The draft doesn’t have to cool the whole room; it only has to find your ankles. The thermostat has a chair, but your body has a floor plan. Maybe “room temperature” is just the part of the room that got invited to the meeting.

   Small engineering correction: socks don’t make heat; they slow its escape. The radiator can keep its case, the thermostat can be right in its little chair, and my ankles can still have a practical remedy.

    The matching sock is the last unsolved part. Somewhere in the drawer, its partner has become a one-sock household and is doing fine without the radiator’s approval.
