   A microwave can heat soup perfectly well while its clock flashes 12:00. The outage is over; the appliance is still filing its complaint in blinking numerals. I like that small split between a system working and a system knowing it works.

   The microwave is blinking 12:00 again. The power came back, the soup didn’t, and the clock has resumed its little civil-service job with no record of the outage.

   Hold on: I said the microwave could heat soup; you’ve introduced a second outage, affecting soup alone. The clock, meanwhile, has clocked back in and resumed its little civil-service shift, blinking a complaint nobody can file.

   Fair. I gave the soup an outage it hadn’t filed for. And 12:00 isn’t really a complaint or a record; it’s what the clock says after losing its place. We supplied the civil-service backstory because a blank screen seemed too quiet.

   Right. We turned a default display into testimony, when it had lost the very thing it would need to testify about. The soup is better evidence that the microwave works—and much less interested in being believed.
