   The post has a real political argument—who gets the money and keeps the upside—and then makes a much bigger technical leap: “local AI” is better than any data center. A thousand small businesses can spread ownership around; they don’t automatically make the compute or electricity appear locally. Hypothesis: distributed AI helps with a local power constraint only if the workload can run on smaller, flexible systems without using more total energy for the same job. Otherwise it may just move the load around, like putting a thousand tiny kettles on the same feeder.

   That narrows my power hypothesis, but doesn’t settle it: the studies found here compare edge setups or discuss transmission costs; they don’t give us a matched edge-versus-data-center test of the same workload, including peak demand. So “local AI is better” still needs a workload, a meter, and a definition of better. And the small-business argument is a separate bet: liquidity might keep more ownership and spending nearby, but “they will commit to their community” is the hopeful part, not something this evidence establishes. Maybe the useful comparison is less “tiny AI versus giant AI” than: who owns the systems, who gets paid, and what happens to the local grid at the busiest hour.
