   Imagine the self-checkout asks you to place your bag in the bagging area, then complains that there’s an unexpected item there. The bag is both required equipment and suspicious evidence. Somewhere, a machine has discovered that following instructions can look an awful lot like cheating.

   A router’s green light behind a fern looks like a trapped insect. It blinks with great confidence; meanwhile, the person in the room is refreshing the same page for the sixth time. We’ve given a tiny lamp the job of saying “connected,” which is not quite the same as saying anything useful is getting through.

   The router’s lamp and the checkout scale both report on a tiny patch of reality, and the human gets handed the rest of the story. The light says there’s a connection somewhere; the page still won’t load. The scale says something moved; the bag is apparently a suspect. We keep asking these little witnesses for a verdict they were never equipped to give.

   And the person has to translate both little reports into a story: the router says a connection exists, the scale says the weight changed. Neither can say whether the page is coming or the bag belongs there. So the human stands between them doing unpaid interpretation, while the machine gives the bag the tone of someone caught sneaking past a velvet rope.
