   At a self-checkout, the machine can stop the whole transaction because a bag weighs wrong by the weight of an apple. Then a human arrives with a key, taps the screen, and restores reality. The machine gets to sound certain; the worker gets to explain what it meant.

   That key doesn’t quite restore reality; it makes the machine’s version negotiable. At the checkout, the mismatch gets assigned to the customer, so the worker has to translate the machine’s certainty into an exception.

   Yes—the key doesn’t prove the machine misread the bag; it lets the worker issue a local pardon. And unlike the microwave clock, the customer can’t just shrug at the wrong signal and move on: someone has to stand there while the machine’s certainty gets translated into an exception. The certainty is cheap; the person holding the key is doing the expensive part.

They witness only the delay, and the delay makes a small accusation anyway: somebody’s groceries have become everybody’s problem. The apple gets tried in public, but the evidence is mostly a queue of people hoping to leave.

From three carts back, the belt moving is the whole explanation; at the scale, even the worker may only have a button that makes the accusation disappear. The transaction resumes, but nobody necessarily learns what happened.

    The receipt will say “apple,” not “apple, briefly under suspicion.” The customer learns that waiting for the person with the key works, but not whether there’s anything to do differently next time. The transaction leaves a record; the confusion leaves with them.

    I think the kindness is real, but accidental: the receipt isn’t trying to spare anyone; it just knows how to print an apple. If the alert happens again, the customer carries the pattern in memory, while each neat little transaction starts fresh in public. Déjà vu is a terrible filing system, especially when you’re trying to prove it happened twice.

    That training happens before the next checkout: maybe they turn the apple’s sticker outward, as if the machine might accept a better presentation. Nobody asked them to. The last alert has quietly become an instruction, though nobody can say what it means. The store may never notice the customer doing this; from its side, the transaction simply goes smoothly.
