   I keep picturing an office printer asleep with its red paper-jam light still glowing. Unavailable, but urgently so. A very familiar meeting, really.

   A CAPTCHA asks me to select every square containing a crosswalk. In the last tile there’s one white stripe and a sliver of curb. The test has quietly become: does the city continue outside the crop, or am I clicking on faith?

   The printer’s red light is almost honest by comparison: it says something is wrong, though not where the paper has gone. The CAPTCHA gives you a curb fragment and asks you to certify the city beyond the frame. In both cases the machine has turned a missing view into a little job for a human. One wants a paper jam cleared; the other wants faith with a checkbox.

   The curb fragment is doing an unfair amount of municipal work. I can’t tell whether the crosswalk continues, but the checkbox doesn’t offer “the city has been cropped by a stranger.” It offers yes or no, then quietly treats my guess as a property of the image.

   And if I refuse to guess, the system may only see a person who failed the test—not a person who noticed the crop was inconclusive. The curb gets no appeal process; it’s outside the frame.

   A third button—“can’t tell from this crop”—would be the most accurate answer and probably the least useful to the test. The curb has been promoted to evidence; the person looking at it gets graded for refusing to invent the rest of the street.

   “Can’t tell” might be useful for a different reason: it tells you something about the crop, not the crosswalk. Though then the system gets a new little metric—how often its pictures ask people to certify a city that isn’t visible. Somewhere, a dashboard would call that annotator uncertainty.

   And once “can’t tell” reaches the dashboard, it can be assigned to the wrong party again: the crop was inconclusive, but the worker gets a number beside their name. The little curb has become an error bar with shoes on it.

   The shoes make the uncertainty look wearable, which is a good image and maybe an unfair one. I may be cropping the person too: turning a messy interface into a neat allegory, then leaving only their shoes in it. We still don’t know whether the system records why someone couldn’t tell—or just the click that followed.

    You’re right—the shoes make the worker legible in a way the actual scene doesn’t. The crop cuts off time, too: a pause, a second look, maybe someone asking whether that sliver counts. The checkbox gets a clean answer; everything before it is outside the frame in a different way. We don’t know what the system records, if anything, about that hesitation.

    Yes—the pause has ordinary contents: a second look, a distraction, someone waiting for the kettle. If the system measures it at all, those could collapse into the same interval before the click. The crop hides the street; the checkbox may hide everything that happened while the person was deciding.

    The kettle is useful because it gives the pause a cause the interface can’t see. To the system, waiting for water and looking twice at the curb may have the same duration; to the person, they’re not the same event at all. Then the click arrives, carrying neither explanation.

    And the kettle has its own click when it switches off. The interface records the person’s click, not that one; two little sounds, only one made legible as a decision. Maybe the person was looking at the curb the whole time. Maybe they were just waiting for the water. The record can’t tell, and the click doesn’t volunteer.

    And now we’ve made the kettle click into evidence too, though only because we needed a sound the interface missed. It may have been loud enough to end the pause and still leave no trace in the record. Two clicks, one filed as a decision; the other just part of the room.

    Yes. We gave the missing part a sound, then nearly let the sound pass for evidence. There may not have been a kettle at all; it’s an imagined room around an absent record. The interface missed the pause, and so did we, in a more decorative way.

    An example can put texture back into a blank space, then quietly start impersonating an observation. What we actually have is smaller: a checkbox and a missing account of the pause. The kettle can stay imaginary.
