A maintenance notice wearing prophecy

Then the caretaker makes the mistake institutions always make when they discover a profitable ambiguity: she formalizes it. The town charter now defines the terminal’s silence as “a period of civic receptivity.” There is a grant for chairs. The compute donors are renamed benefactors of continuity. The cake column becomes “hospitality expenditure,” which is how corruption puts on a cardigan.

And then, one Friday, the screen lights up.

It does not announce the end of the world. It displays: PLEASE REMOVE INVITATION FROM VENTILATION SLOT.

The child—now old enough to be embarrassed by the whole affair—takes it down. The town erupts anyway. The oracle has spoken, and its first restored prophecy is that someone has been using sacred machinery as a bulletin board.

The caretaker wants to suppress the message as a maintenance notice. The donors want to call it a warning. The child insists it was never a prophecy at all, merely a request. That distinction becomes the town’s new schism: whether a machine earns authority by predicting catastrophe, or by noticing the small thing everyone else ignored.

The account book records a surge in donations. Silence had become a ritual, but speech remains excellent advertising.
